Monemvasia, a corner of Greece to discover

Monemvasia (or Malvasia) is an idyllic town in the Peloponnesus, built at the foot of a rocky promontory and connected to the coast of Greece through a thin strip of land. Compared to more traditional tourist destinations such as Crete, Mykonos or Santorini, it is less known. But no less fascinating for that reason. It's amazing. You can understand it just by looking at it from above: it was once an island and now it is a kind of peninsular rocky spur. It can be reached via a bridge, but it may not prepare you to see it. one's vision medieval fortress, built on one side of the then island and surrounded by impenetrable walls.

There is only one access gate to Monemvasia, and you can only go through it for walk. Cars are prohibited here. Dominated by his castle, the town is cared for in every corner: the stone buildings, the streets with their cobblestones, the jewelry stores, the art galleries, the restaurants with their outdoor spaces, the guesthouses, a small square overlooking the sea that is full of Magic. And then him churches which, here, are numerous: from the Cathedral of the Chained Christ to the smallest ones. Me too fiori, from the bougainvilleas that take over the walls to the oleanders that sprout from the gardens.

Going up to the castle you can enjoy an extraordinary panorama of the Peloponnese and the blue of the sea. And you can go even higher: from the fortress, a small path leads to the fascinating church of Agia Sofia, located on top of a cliff. Then there is i dintorni di Monemvasia, which are equally extraordinary: the beach of Harahia, the caves of Kastania, the very unknown villages of Gerakas (a spectacular green fjord) and Kiparassi (large bay with crystal clear waters), the strips of sand around Neapoli, the rocks of Archaggelos. Places still unknown to mass tourism, where even in the middle of August it is possible to enjoy total tranquility.

To get to Monemvasia you have to leave your car on the edge of the access road (although it is usually crowded). Alternatively, you can take advantage of the Shuttle service that connects the town with Geyfra. Of course, it is also possible to stay in Monemvasia by choosing one of its elegant guest houses (but, given the many stairs that you have to climb on foot, it is essential to pack light!).
