Russian, Turkish and ancient Persian influences can be admired everywhere: the capital was a strategic point, an obligatory passage for the merchants who traveled the Silk Road, but also for the various armies that had to cross the world to conquer new lands. At the Avlabari area

Here we can admire the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is the main Orthodox church of the capital. Started in 1989 to celebrate the 1500 years of the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church, it was completed in 2004. Impressive, so much so that it leaves you speechless, it also houses a theology academy and the patriarchal residence. In this area we can also admire historic buildings and churches, including the Anchiskhati basilica – the oldest of Tbilisi – and the Sioni cathedral.



The Bridge of Peace

Beautiful and futuristic, designed by the Italian Michele de Lucchi and inaugurated in 2010, the Peace Bridge is built in glass and steel to highlight the crossing of the Mtkvari river where the Silk Road already passed. The modern winks at the ancient in a large redevelopment project of the city that is opening Tbilisi to a of ever greater and higher quality.

The Georgia Botanical Garden

At the foot of the Narikala fortress there is a corner of uncontaminated nature within the city, with waterfalls, flowers and panoramic paths on rocky ridges. The Georgia Botanical Garden definitely worth a visit.

Freedom Square

La Piazza della Libertà it is famous for the statue of St. George and the Old Town Hall. This square is a sort of open-air museum that tells us about the history and tradition of Georgia: in fact, it is not difficult to find - in the venues in the area - concerts of panduri, the traditional Georgian instrument. Great celebrations take place in the square on May 26th, the day on which the foundation of the Republic in 1918 is remembered.

What to see in Tbilisi to get closer to national culture? Definitely the Georgia Museum. Rich in ancient historical treasures, Greek and Roman finds, it houses interesting rooms dedicated to the Russian invasions.

Narikala Fortress

Undisputed symbol of Tbilisi, Narikala Fortress can be reached via a cable car. After enjoying the view from above along the way you can appreciate all the majesty of the fortress and the Church of San Nicola, visible from every part of the city thanks to its very high bell tower.

The area is rich in sulphurous waters, so much so Tbilisi is renowned as spa town. After exploring the city, why not relax in the underground Arab baths? Or we can opt for the Bagni Orbelliani on the surface, with traditional blue tiles.

Tbilisi is not a dangerous city for the traveler. As in all large cities you can find pickpockets or scammers, but the situation is no more serious than in other places. The streets are well patrolled by very courteous and helpful policemen. Only flaw? Georgians drive a little outside the lines and car accidents are frequent, so if you rent a car remember to take out full insurance.
