There are unmistakable things in the world, and one of them is Luke Skywalker's home on the planet Tatooine. What if we told you that it really exists?
When films are made, the environments are often artfully constructed by the screenwriters. Many do not exist, others are created on the computer: but there are things that, fortunately, can be touched by hand. One of these is Luke Skywalker's home on the planet Tatooine, which is none other than the Hotel Sidi Driss in the village of Matmâta, in Tunisia. Much of the Star Wars filming was done in the country, and the town characterized by buildings dating back to Berber architecture it turned out to be perfect for hosting the Star Wars crew.
The Hotel Sidi Driss is located in Tunia in the village of Matmâta: the exact history that led to the construction of the settlement is not known, but it should be dated between 264 and 146 BC, i.e. at the time of the Punic Wars. The peculiarity of this place lies in the fact that, until 1967, it was practically unknown. Ten years later George Lucas, looking at the Hotel Sidi Driss, had a flash of genius: that would have been Luke Skywalker's home in Star Wars Episode IV, “A New Hope.” In the following years, the Hotel Sidi Driss was put into oblivion and the owners of the structure, instead of enhancing this place, had eliminated any reference to Star Wars. Until 1995, when a fan restored a fresco in one of the rooms. In 2000, the Hotel Sidi Driss was used again to host the filming of Episode II, “Attack of the Clones”. And he's back to be one of the places to visit for Star Wars fans traveling through Tunisia.
The Hotel Sidi Driss is open all year round: It is made up of twenty rooms and can accommodate up to 145 people. If you are a Star Wars fan, you cannot miss the house that gave birth to Luke Skywalker: not only because the location offers a wonderful backdrop for your souvenir photos, but because the village of Matmâta is part of a important period in the history of Tunisia. No less fascinating than that of Star Wars.
