Are you undecided between the nightlife of Ibiza and the crystal clear waters of the Maldives? Why not completely change your destination and opt for tunisia? Off its coasts we find the isole Kerkennah, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
The Tunisian archipelago rises in the Gulf of Gabes, a few kilometers as the crow flies from Sfax. It is made up of 7 islands of various sizes, united by a torrid climate and a progressive desertification of their land.
There are only two islands currently inhabited, the largest: Chergui and Gharbi, which together number just over 14 thousand people. In reality, the territory over which the archipelago extends is quite large, since it exceeds 160 square kilometers. It is in this stretch of the Mediterranean Sea that we can therefore find it a stupendous and still partially unknown landscape to mass tourism.
There are still few visitors who reach the Kerkennah Islands, despite them being among the most beautiful African locations. Mainly, those who come there for holidays are Tunisians who have decided to buy one here second home for the summer. However, in recent years the archipelago has experienced a peak of notoriety, perhaps thanks to his fascinating panorama and small villages waiting to be explored. How to reach the Kerkennah Islands and what to visit once you get there?
The recommended route for tourists includes a flight to Sfax, and then a short crossing to the port of Sidi Youssef, located on the western end of the island of Gharbi. From here it is possible to reach every point of the archipelago, thanks to the only asphalt road that leads up to El Ataya, ad est, e a Kraten, North.
The most tourist area is undoubtedly the island of Chergui, and in particular the city of Sidi Fredj, in the western part. In this location there are several hotels and restaurants, but also splendid beaches and some nightclubs – but don't think you can find the frenzy of places like Djerba here. One of the main activities on the archipelago is the octopus fishing, which is also often practiced by those who go there on holiday. Furthermore, the crystal clear waters and sandy bottoms are perfect for those who love it snorkeling.
Finally, a tour to visit the fishing villages which are located a few steps from the sea. Here it is as if time has stopped, and it is possible to admire a spectacular panorama that has enchanted all those who come across it for decades. The best time to go on holiday is summer: although the climate is almost desert and temperatures easily reach 40°C, the area is particularly dry and often affected by fresh winds called gharbi.
