In Argentina, in the extreme northwest of the country, where the border with Chile, is the province of leap. Here you will find a railway route of incredible charm. And the train of the clouds, and it really seems to lead towards heaven.
The setting is incredible Andes mountains. Here, the Cloud Train is actually the ramp C-14 of the Belgrano railway. Why is it called that? Because, in several sections, the train travels ad more than 4000 meters above sea level, allowing travelers to see clouds under bridges or on hillsides. In the past, boarding the Cloud Train meant traveling 217 kilometers, in a total of about 15 hours round trip, through the spectacular bull ravine. Today, sitting inside its fascinating carriages you can only travel 24 kilometers, from San Antonio de los Cobres to the La Polvorilla return viaduct, making the section from Santa to San Antonio del los Cobres (round trip) by bus. But the magic of the experience does not change.
There are, therefore, two possibilities: you can leave by bus from the Salta station and get there. Alfarcito For breakfast we continue towards the Quebrada de las Cuevas and the Muñano plain, to reach San Antonio de los Cobres and board the Cloud Train here. This then leads to La Polvorilla Viaduct which, located 4200 meters above sea level, is located the most impressive engineering work of the last century. Then we return to San Antonio and, from here, we return to the city of Salta after making a stop in Saint Rose of Tastil, with its Site Museum and the interesting local craft center.
Alternatively, you can limit yourself to the train that leaves directly from the San Antonio de los Cobres station, to treat yourself to that hour of show in the middle of the sky.
Until October 31, the departures of the Train to the Clouds are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; from November 1 to December 31 are reduced to two (Tuesday and Saturday). The cost of the ticket? 2850 Argentine Pesos for the tour that includes bus and train, 1850 only for the train.
