Closed for 16 months, the Poás Volcano National Park – jewel of Costa Rica – reopens its doors. And it becomes an unmissable destination for tourists who visit the country.
With a new online reservation system and new security measures, the famous Costa Rican national park has left behind thevolcanic eruption of April 2017, which forced it to close. And he has returned to welcome tourists again, attracted by his extraordinary landscape.
Thirty miles north of the capital San José, Parque Nacional Volcán Poás covers 16.000 acres in the province of Alajuela. For a long time, it has held enormous fascination among tourists for the volcano that it holds in its heart, but also for its being an easily accessible place for those who intend to walk in the middle of the forest, away from the chaos of the city. Today, the home of Poás (one of the country's 6 active volcanoes), has reopened its doors.
Since last August, it has been possible to cross the threshold of the splendid park again. A park that has been made safe thanks to the use of smoke sensors which, in real time, warn tourists about the presence or absence of toxic gases coming from the crater. Entrance can also be booked online, through a site designed specifically for more organized and controlled access management: tourists are now divided into groups of 50, and can remain inside the observatory for a maximum of 20 minutes. The cost of the ticket? 13 €.
After all, the Poás has always been one of the most visited naturalistic places in the country. And not only because it is easy to reach it, but above all for its suggestive position surrounded by forests. Of basaltic nature and 2.708 meters high, it has a diameter of 1.5 km and a depth of 300 meters. At the bottom there is a lake from which sulphurous gases rise, while a second crater (the Botos) hosts another lake with cold waters.
Visiting the park that protects the crater is now possible again. And it is an unmissable opportunity to see one of the most beautiful natural places on the American continent (and beyond). With that thrill of adrenaline that gives the awareness that - that volcano - is still very active.
