The Maltese archipelago is made up of three main islands, Malta, Gozo e Cumin, and some uninhabited islets. Malta's climate is purely Mediterranean, with mild winters and subject to frequent rain, while summers are hot and sunny.
In winter from December to February we enjoy a mild climate, the average daily temperature in December is around 14°C, while between January and February it drops to 12°C. The climate rarely becomes harsher and temperatures drop to a maximum of 10°C, so snow or frost never occur, but sunny days can still alternate with others subject to rainy and windy precipitation. A rain jacket or in any case a rain jacket and an umbrella must not be missing in your luggage if you decide to visit Malta in this period.
In spring maximum temperatures in March are around 17°C and tend to increase in April reaching 19°C and 23°C in May. In this season, sunny days are almost a constant in Malta and rains are much less frequent; even if the weather is still a bit unstable, the first subtropical heat waves that characterize the summer period are starting to be felt and are often accompanied by the hot Scirocco wind.
This season will allow you to organize a sporting holiday, where you can go cycling, trekking, bird watching and much more. If you decide to visit Malta in this season it is advisable to have some sweaters in your luggage as well as comfortable and sporty clothing, since the evenings are still cool even if during the day the sun will be enough to give you a pleasant warmth.
THEsummer of Malta is muggy and the maximum temperatures recorded in the months of June, July and August reach and sometimes exceed 30°C, made bearable because they are mitigated by the sea breezes: this is certainly the preferable season for those who want to take advantage of the sea and of the swimming pools present in the numerous hotels. Here you can undoubtedly show off your most colorful costumes. There are certainly the splendid swimming pools; but if you prefer, dive into the Mediterranean. You can also think about organizing a nice sailing trip and reach Cumin to see the famous Blu Lagoon and go snorkeling or simply enjoy the beaches. A good sunscreen and some cold drinks to quench your thirst will be essential.
Malta in September maintains the characteristics of the summer climate but with temperatures that gradually lower especially in the first part of the month. Towards the end of the month, however, storms are more frequent as the cooler currents contrast with the still warm sea. L'autunno Maltese is still very pleasant, the month of October still offers maximum temperatures of around 24-25°C, but it is in this month and in November that there are rainy phenomena so it is better not to be found without an umbrella if you opt for this season.
It can be said that the Malta archipelago offers favorable weather conditions throughout the year and depending on what your idea of a holiday is, you can certainly choose the period that best suits you. The best months to visit the island of Malta and enjoy wonderful views are from March to June, when the beauty of the vegetation offers brilliant colors reaching the maximum of wonder.
It is not possible to immerse yourself in the sea water because it is still cold, but it will be enough to wait until the month of May and undoubtedly the summer months for those who are planning a holiday purely dedicated to bathing (which however remains possible even in the month of September, although the bright colors give way to the darker ones of autumn). In the winter months you could dedicate yourself to a visit to Valletta, the capital of the island of Malta, taking advantage of the low turnout of tourists that you might instead find in the summer period.
