And then there are selfies, the ones we take carefully choosing the places that will be the backdrop to our most beautiful photographs.
E if you are a fan of the self-timer, especially when you are travelling, then you cannot fail to include Cantarranas in the list of next destinations to reach. Known as the country of murals, this small and colorful town in Honduras has made its reputation as city of selfies. The reason? Let's find out together.
Among the streets of Cantarranas
It is an unusual, particular journey far from the most beaten paths of mass tourism, what we are doing together with you today and which takes us directly to Honduras.
The Central American country, bathed by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south, is home to an extraordinary place that leaves all travelers who come here breathless. This is Cantarranas, already known as the town of murals, because in fact theStreet art is the absolute protagonist here. There is no building, house or structure that has not been expertly enhanced with street art. What emerges, looking at the city as a whole, is one outdoor art gallery in which the masonry works seem to come to life.
Located in the department of Francisco Morazán, the municipality of Honduras was founded in the 1667 with the name of Cantarranas. This is not a common destination among tourists, who are more fascinated by the sea and the nature that characterizes Honduras than by the rest. Yet this place is extraordinary, as are its murals and its history.
The city of selfies
La redevelopment of Cantarranas which gives the city its current appearance, has its motivations in a destiny shared by many areas of the world. While some places find themselves forced to face the consequences of too often invasive mass tourism, in fact, there are others who feel theneed to attract travellers to transform tourism into an economic source. And this is the case of the Honduran city which, in recent years, has transformed itself into an open-air museum, an ideal scenario for taking the perfect selfie and sharing it on social media.
Located less than 50 km from Tegucigalpa, Cantarranas has transformed from an ancient mining center to a city of selfies. All thanks to the works that stand out on the facades of the colonial-style buildings and which color the streets and squares in a surprising way.
The murals of Cantarranas, which bear the signature of local artists, speak of the vast and varied territory of the country: there are forests, flora and fauna, there are scenes of urban and rural life. There is a large drawing that frames the streets of the city and all those routes that citizens and travelers cross every day.
It is precisely here, after urban redevelopment, that tourists choose to stop. To look at the works, to immortalize with your smartphone that riot of art and color that explodes in every corner of the city and to take numerous selfies to share on social networks.
