Ancient Venetian cities, small oases of peace, pleasant beaches, all this is Messinia, the least known region of mainland Greece, rich in history and evocative charm.
Also known as Messenia, this territory was delimited in 371 BC. C., after the defeat of Sparta, after 350 years of dominion over the Peloponnese. Today, this corner of paradise located in the southwest region allows you to know and experience Greece from another perspective.
There are no islands, we stay on the mainland, far from mass tourism. Messenia is easily reached: the destination is, in fact, just a three-hour drive from Athens. Alternatively, there are several flights, including low-cost companies, that land directly in Kalamata, the second capital of the region. It is a destination far from vacations characterized by large crowds, so here you will find a little piece of the Mediterranean, protected and uncontaminated.
Nature, suggestive and primitive, enhances the charm of Ancient Greece: between sea and green landscapes, you will find yourself walking on the walls of the Pylos paleokastro. The coast is characterized by inlets, strips of golden sand and rocky headlands.
The promenade is characterized by free zones that alternate with spa establishments and beaches. However, it will not be difficult to find some Paradise beaches where you can experience the sea with total freedom. One of the most appreciated and loved places by travelers and locals is the Playa Voidokilia: a long, narrow circular strip of sand that stretches between the sea and the Gialova lagoon: here the view is surreal and gives the impression of living in a middle ground.
Even the interior is charming: the landscape is characterized by green expanses from which you can admire the sea from afar.
Messenia is the ideal place to live a slow vacation. Life in the villages of this area is quite simple and ordinary: the beaches are deserted and walking around the city you can meet local fishermen and farmers, some souvenir shops and taverns. This will allow you to find a authentic contact with the territory.
The beauty of Messenia also inspired cinematographic masterpieces. In fact, this region of Greece was the charming setting for the third episode of the romantic comedy Before Midnight.
An impermeable place, which fascinates and enchants: it is true that Messenia is there. Ideal destination for a vacation out of the ordinary.
