Un lake that appears and disappears in a few hours, can you believe it? It is not, as it might seem, a magic borrowed from some fairy tale, but a real place that (with a bit of luck) you too will be able to see.
This amazing place is located in Australia, hidden among the mountains south of Tasmania. When visible, the lake has an intense blue color and crystal clear water. For its characteristic of appearing and disappearing it was renamed Disappearing Tarn (disappearing pond).
The fact that the lake suddenly appears a couple of times a year and then vanishes into thin air immediately afterwards meant that the Disappearing Tarn was surrounded by a halo of magic and mystery. The truth, unfortunately, is less poetic than you might think (but no less fascinating). What fills this uncontaminated corner of forest with water is not an underground spring, but the rain or snow. The abundance of precipitation and the air temperature determine the width and depth of the lake and, above all, its "duration": sometimes it remains visible for days, other times only for a few hours, until the water is reabsorbed by the ground… as if by magic.
Being able to see it is a sensational experience, as well as a source of pride reserved for a few lucky and intrepid hikers. There are many people who face a trekking of over six kilometres, following a path that climbs up the monte Wellington, without being sure that the lake will be present at the appointment. But, according to the stories of those who have managed to see it, it is really worth a try.
