In the heart of Puglia, on the Murgia Barese, a few kilometers from Bari and only 1 km from the town of Castellana Grotte, there are Castellana Caves, a complex of underground caves of karst origin of enormous tourist and speleological interest.
Discovered on 23 January 1938 by the speleologist of Lodi, Franco Anelli, the caves mark the path of an ancient underground river and form a grandiose speleological complex, the most beautiful known in Italy.
The visit is carried out with the help of a guide, according to two itineraries:
- the short one of about 1 km, up to the Cavern of the Precipice, lasting 50 minutes,
- and the complete one, up to the White Grotto, about 3 km long and lasting 2 hours.
The caves are accessed via a staircase that leads to the bottom of the Grave, while the ascent is ensured by a couple of fast and safe lifts.
In spring it is also an ideal destination for those who want to spend their days outdoors in the Valle d'Itria area there are other tourist attractions like it ZooSafari and Fasanolandia in Fasano, and the trulli ad Alberobello which make the area an interesting tourist center with enormous potential, especially for the flow of tourists to Puglia.
