Naarden is a small town in Holland, just 20 km from Amsterdam, surrounded by the greenery of the region Throw and Fight. Having become famous for its particular star shape, to say the least, it attracts tourists from everywhere, together with the great charm of the surrounding nature. All this makes it one of the main destinations for those wishing to explore the north of the country.
It is a fortress city with a long history, Naarden, with documentation that they ascertain its existence as early as the year 1000. Destroyed by a flood, it was rebuilt in 1350 and then remained on the same exact site until today. The fortification process began after the 1572 invasion by the Spanish, in order to punish Holland for its rebellion. The whole thing took a long time and was completed more than a century later, in 1685. The result? A star plant, which still today enchants with its creativity.
Visiting Naarden means getting lost in its streets, immersing yourself in an atmosphere with an ancient flavour. It is possible to follow the city walls, appreciating the various fortifications built in a time now very distant, and then try your hand at an in-depth exploration of the town centre, characterized by eighteenth-century style houses.
There are various attractions present, such as the Great Church, among the prominent monuments of the city. Fifteenth-century style for a structure of great historical value, with wooden ceilings and a 45 meter high tower, with a splendid view of the city. To discover the history of the city you can stop at the Netherlands Fortress Museum, where you witness the demonstration of the use of a real cannon.
Nature dominates in the surroundings of the city, with one beautiful lake perfectly preserved, can be visited with boat excursions. Trekking lovers can easily fall in love with the surrounding area, trying their hand at hiking or cycling. For a ride surrounded by greenery there is a specific fence, enjoying the varied flora in total safety.
It's easy to visit Naarden starting from Amsterdam, arriving in the city in about 20 minutes away train, getting off at Naarden-Bussum station. If you are forced to get off at Muiden or Weesp, you can take the bus (line 110) and then find yourself in the star-shaped fortified city. For the more sporty, however, it will be possible to travel the stretch from Amsterdam to Naarden bicycle in about an hour and a half.
