Overlooking lake of Thun, in the Canton of Bern, has been defined as “the most beautiful village in Switzerland 2018".
Inhabited since the Middle Ages, it is one of the most historic places in the country.
The architecture of Oberhofen has remained almost intact, with the half-timbered houses, the towers, the castle - which today houses the Historical Museum - and the cobbled alleys in the historic center.
The castle is the most iconic building of the village. Overlooking the lake, it has a large English garden with several species of rare plants. Near the castle there is the beautiful historic Wichterheer building which today houses the Museum of Hours and Mechanical Music.
In addition to being an incredibly picturesque village, the lake overlooked by the beautiful houses - and in particular a turret that magically emerges from the water - and the mountains that surround it contribute to adding even more charm, thus creating a perfect picture.
The Lake Thun area is famous for particularly mild climate which guarantees the 2 thousand inhabitants and tourists who visit it to spend their free time outdoors even in winter. Tourists like to stroll along the Seestrasse which runs around the lake. The climate is so ideal that the hills around the lake are full of vineyards that produce excellent wine.
The excellent climate has also contributed to the development of tourism, in particular tourism thermal, giving rise, since 1800, to numerous hotels with spas. But a few kilometers away, in the Bernese Alps, there are some of the most famous ski slopes in Switzerland, such as those of Wengen, just to mention a well-known location.
Oberhofen was elected the most beautiful Swiss village of the year by the Swiss periodicals Schweizer Illustrierte, L'Illustré and il Caffè, beating out 50 other contenders.
