It is a truly revolutionary approach that the Maldives government wants to adopt in an experiment which, if it works, could represent the solution to the problem of rising sea levels. He will be born soon Maldives Floating City, a real floating city with low environmental impact, to preserve nature and the incredible panorama of this earthly paradise.

Thanks to one ambitious architectural planning, the country aims for an eco-sustainable future for both residents and tourists, giving life to an impressive urban planning project the likes of which has never been seen before. The project, conceived by the Dutch company Dutch Docklands, involves the construction of an entirely floating city inside a small lagoon located a few minutes from Male, the Maldivian capital, and its international airport - so as to guarantee convenient connections for travellers, too.

The buildings will rise directly on the water, in an area of approximately 200 hectares where there will be space not only for houses that will welcome the city's future residents, but also hotels, restaurants and trendy boutiques, as well as a hospital and a small school. A real village with all comforts, built with the utmost respect for the environment and the sea. From above, Maldives Floating City will have a very particular appearance: it will look like coral, with rows of buildings arranged in a hexagon – like gigantic honeycombs.

If in the center of the city there will be large spaces intended for housing, sand islands will be created around it where larger structures, such as hotels, will be located. It will be precisely these strips of land that will keep the floating infrastructures anchored, and they will also have a more important function: that of acting as barrier to block ocean waves and “turn off” their impetuous strength.

The technical details are currently being defined, but it is already clear that the homes and shops will be built on a single level, following the dictates of the typical Maldivian style. The project was born in 2009, but only this year was it brought to the attention of the public. The works are in fact about to begin: next September the first preparatory works will begin, while actual construction will start in 2022. According to what experts predict, the floating city should be finished in September next year.

Sales will also open soon, and apparently the prices should be quite accessible. We are talking about purchasable lots starting from 250 thousand dollars (just over 200 thousand euros), including a house of approximately 300 square meters with a roof terrace. Sea view, obviously. The designers' idea is to allow the coexistence of tourists, who will find accommodation in the resorts that will embellish the city, and residents, who instead they will have their home in the heart of the floating island. A perfect way to ensure that workers in the tourism sector can return to their families every evening.

As mentioned before, the initiative could prove itself an excellent solution to the problem of global warming. The Maldives are one of the lowest countries in the world, and rising sea levels are a risk they will have to face in the probably not too distant future. Build floating cities it could save the thousand-year-old culture of the Maldivian populations, giving them a new place to live.
