The legend of Huacachina

The lake that stands in the heart of Huacachina is natural, and it was formed thanks to underground currents rich in minerals that filter through the sand, and which have allowed the vegetation to grow more lush than ever. Palm trees, eucalyptus and splendid specimens of pale algarrobo surround the body of water and create a lush and incredible oasis.

Although the origins of this place are largely explained by science, there are others much more evocative local stories, which make Huacachina even more fascinating and mysterious.

According to legend, in fact, precisely in this area of the desert there lived a beautiful inca princess named after Huacca China. She loved to spend her days singing, and her voice was so enchanting that no one could resist it. The story goes that to escape the overbearing courtship of a man, the girl ran away and took refuge in a lagoon to hide. She transformed into a mermaid, however, and was never able to leave that place again.

A second version of the story, dedicated to the more romantic, connects the birth of the oasis to the princess's pain at the death of her great love. They would have been his tearsIn fact, a creare Huacachina which, in the native language, means "Crying Woman".
