Bellver Castle is a fortress perched on the top of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the island of Mallorca. The castle is located 112,6 meters above sea level and about 3 km west of the city of Palma de Mallorca, and is considered a rare example of a circular castle in the Catalan Gothic style.
The portico on the upper floor is in Gothic style, while the arches on the ground floor are in Romanesque style. The castle is built around a courtyard, and the two floors surrounding the courtyard are rounded. The first floor was the noble floor, where the kings resided, while the ground floor was for the servants and the soldiers who camped there.
The castle, surrounded by a large 4-meter moat, has three semicircular buttresses and is connected, by a bridge, to a tower independent of the central structure. This tower, called Torre del Homenaje, in the intentions of those who designed it, was to represent the last defensive bulwark in the event of an enemy attack.
The castle was built as a summer residence of the kings of Mallorca, in 1300 by James II on a project by the architect Pere Salvà, but later it was used as a prison, and numerous illustrious characters were imprisoned here over the centuries. From 1936 the ground floor was used as a local history museum of the city of Palma de Mallorca
From the top of the castle you can admire the whole bay and the city of Palma de Mallorca, which gave the castle its name and is certainly one of the main attractions and things to see in Mallorca.
