The Cuevas del Drach or Caves of the Dragon are four large caves found on the island of Mallorca, the main Balearic island in Spain.
They are located in the municipality of Manacor, near the town of Porto Cristo. They were mentioned already mentioned in a letter of 1338, so their discovery probably dates back even earlier.
The quarries extend to a depth of 25 meters and have a length of 2,4 km. The four caves, called the Black Grotto, the White Grotto, the Luis Salvador Grotto and the Grotto of the French, are connected to each other.
The caves were formed by the water that penetrated the earth and rock before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. Some researchers think that the formation of these caves can be traced back to the Miocene.
There is also an underground lake located in the quarries, called Lago Martel, which measures approximately 115 meters in length and 30 meters in width. It is named after the French explorer and scientist Édouard-Alfred Martel, who is considered the founding father of speleology (the study of caves).
A German explorer, MF Will, had mapped the Black and White cave in 1880. Martel was invited to explore the cave in 1896, and found two other caves, as well as the underground lake.
The caves are open to the public and are one of Majorca's main attractions. The visit ends with a short classical music concert performed by four musicians on a boat.
Visiting these caves is highly recommended and spectacular. It would be a shame on a holiday or trip to Mallorca not to see these wonderful caves and spectacle of nature.
