A few hours from Italy, reachable by car or more comfortably by train, Lausanne is a magnificent city in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, overlooking the Lake Geneva. Surrounded by hills, woods, meadows and dais Lavaux vineyards, UNESCO heritage, is considered one of the best holiday resort Swiss.
In summer, there is a busy calendar of events to brighten the days (and especially the evenings) of tourists. What is immediately noticeable in Lausanne is the amount of young people. The city is home to some of the most renowned schools, such as the Brillantmont international school, the Institute of Design, the Polytechnic and the hotel school.
The most fascinating area of ââLausanne is its Old Town, almost completely pedestrian, dominated by the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame and characterized by cobbled streets, medieval architecture, artisan workshops and bistros.
Ouchy it is, instead, the seaside resort of Lausanne, where you can take pleasant walks and embark on beautiful excursions, including Evian, in France, on board paddle wheel boats. Further south there are city parks and refined buildings that house luxury hotels, such as the Hotel de l'Angleterre which hosted Lord Byron.
Recently, Lausanne inaugurated an urban redevelopment project in the former industrial area of ââFlon. Instead of workshops, trendy shops, clubs, restaurants and clubs have sprung up here. Lausanne is also home to the International Olympic Committee (Cio) and its museum, Olympic capital and, thanks to the presence of numerous international sports associations and federations, world administrative capital of sport.
Lausanne also has a lot to offer culture lovers: the Collection de l'Art Brut al Castello Beaulieu, the Hermitage Foundation, the Musée de l'Elysée dedicated to photography enthusiasts, the Pipe Museum and many others are worth visiting. For an out-of-town trip, it's worth boarding the Train des vignes from Vevey to Chexbres through the Lavaux vineyards which overlook Lake Geneva.
